Gum chewing- more wrinkles, less filler life span?
April 6th 2010

Smile lines pre treatment

Smile lines post treatment
Increased wrinkles around your mouth or a shortened lifespan of your injectable fillers, consider whether gum-chewing, it may be the culprit.
It freshens your breath and helps you quit smoking, but some cosmetic surgeons believe chewing gum does one more thing: It gives you wrinkles.
“Many of my patients who are gum chewers have a certain pattern of wrinkles around their mouths,” says Joel Schlessinger, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon from Omaha, Nebraska. “And I think the gum is responsible to some degree for it.”
Although no studies have been done showing a link between chewing gum and wrinkles, the topic does come up with some regularity on beauty blogs. Experts attribute the gum-wrinkle connection to two things. First, there’s the repetitive motion of chewing that causes lines and folds around the mouth due to muscle overuse, says Hema Sundaram, MD, a Washington, D.C.-area cosmetic surgeon and laser expert. “I believe chewing gum promotes muscle overactivity and potentially breaks down support tissue within the skin, contributing to volume loss and perhaps loss of skin elasticity,” she says.
What’s more, chewing gum can dislodge dermal fillers that people have injected into their faces to plump up their wrinkles. “It makes your dermal filler last a shorter period of time,” says Sundaram.
Schlessinger says he’s observed this with his patients, as well. “The act of chewing gum can dislodge the fillers earlier,” he says. “It actually pushes them out of the area. They dissipate a lot quicker in gum-chewers, in my opinion.”
Certainly limit smoking, using straws, and whistling!

Cosmetic Surgery not taboo anymore
March 16th 2010
Spas and medical spas often work with clients who are considering plastic surgery, and it is good to know that it isn’t as taboo as it used to be. Sharing this information with clients who are considering plastic surgery may help them to feel more comfortable about their decision.
Cosmetic surgery is everywhere these days: TV, magazines, Internet and more. And according to new data, society is indeed more comfortable talking about cosmetic surgery than ever before.
In a survey released today by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS), 71% of respondents think society is less judgmental about cosmetic surgery than it was just five years ago. Furthermore, about 62% said society’s attitude toward cosmetic surgery made them feel more comfortable about getting a procedure.
“This is a confirmation of what many of us have felt for a long time; that cosmetic surgery has become mainstream,” said Dr. Mark Berman, AACS president-elect. “A variety of factors have contributed to the normalization of our industry, but the bottom line is that people are not afraid to talk openly about cosmetic surgery anymore.”
According to the survey, the most accepted invasive procedures are breast augmentation (42.4%), face lift (32.2%) and tummy tuck (32.1%). Among noninvasive procedures, the most accepted are laser hair removal (61.9%) and Botox (61.6%). Additionally, 52% of respondents said they would tell family about having invasive cosmetic surgery.
About 20% said they would consider getting cosmetic surgery in the future, while about 22% were unsure if they would. Respondents under the age of 40 were nearly twice as likely to consider having a procedure in the future.
“It’s been a long road but thanks to the hard work of so many, cosmetic surgery is rightfully gaining acceptance in our society,” said Dr. Patrick McMenamin, AACS president. “We’ve reached a point where people are no longer quiet about having a cosmetic procedure and that is important to all of us.”

Dr Young’s guide-How to extend the results of your liquid facelift.
December 2nd 2009
The tips mentioned in this section will help an individual extend results of a liquid face lift, advanced dermal filler or awi(anti-wrinkle injection) treatment. These recommendations will also help the patient’s own skin help itself in maintaining results, so that an individual will – over time – require fewer repeat touch up treatments. Most individuals will maintain results for gradually longer and longer times between touch ups. These tips will, in many cases, also help patients need less product in future touch ups. One of the greatest advantages of following each of these tips is to lower lifetime maintenance costs of preserving natural facial contours and healthy, youthful skin.
Tip #1 Use High Grade Skin Care Products
Effective skin care is one of the best ways to continue to reap the benefits of your liquid face lift treatment. The problem is that there are so many exaggerated claims about skin care products that it can be difficult to sort through the vortex of options to determine what
really works. While some over the counter skin products live up to their hype, you might want to consider using medical grade skin care products. Many of the products are made to higher specifications than similar products found over the counter. Many physicians who carry liquid face lift products also carry medical grade skin care products, eg Environ, +/- roller.
It is important to use products that will help you prevent future damage to your skin. A high grade sun screen worn every day can be important in your defense against future skin damage and to assist your liquid face lift products as they stimulate your own skin to produce collagen. A facial cleanser, which balances pH while it exfoliates and extracts impurities is important. Regular application of a high grade moisturizer can help prolong your results. Antioxidant products may be advisable, as well. Ask your doctor about an effective skin care program to help you help your skin maintain the restored contouring and correction of a liquid face lift procedure.
Tip #2 Follow Dr Young’s Advice for Immediate Post Treatment Care
Dr Young will likely tell you not to lie down for a few hours after your awi treatment. You may be asked to avoid exaggerated muscle movement or excessive physical activity for a few hours following your liquid face lift procedure. Following this and other advice that your physician will give you during your treatment session will help the products achieve maximum efficacy. Relax, and be healthy.
Tip #3 Maintain Your Results with Routine Touch Up Treatments
This probably should be the #1 or #2 tip because it can have an enormous impact on how the liquid face lift products stimulate your own skin to regenerate collagen, and how the products will relax the etching of lines over time to restore healthier skin. It seems that the most common mistake individuals make after they have a liquid face lift, advanced dermal filler or awi treatment is that they don’t return timely for a follow up or touch up treatment. Often patients make this decision in order to save money. However, if you are looking for enduring results, money spent in early follow up treatments often equates to tremendous savings over a lifetime.
With respect to most of the advanced dermal fillers, it takes a few touch up sessions before the body really begins to work on its own to regenerate collagen. The effects of regular touch ups are often cumulative, and help extend results for longer and longer intervals between touch up treatments. It is possible that an individual who has maintained regular dermal filler touch up treatments for two or three years may begin to measure treatment intervals in terms of years, not months. For most conditions treated with awi, an individual will need regular treatments every few months. However, with proper skin care and regular awi treatments, the etching of facial wrinkles can (in many instances) be nearly eliminated. Therefore, after a year or two of regular treatments, it is not uncommon for individuals to feel they need follow-up awi treatments only every six months or more. Some even outgrow the need.
Use the Encore Plan!
Tip #4 Use awi in Conjunction with Dermal Filler Treatments Where Applicable
Excessive or exaggerated muscle movement can diminish the endurance of most of the advanced dermal fillers. Since awi relaxes excessive muscle movement, it effectively extends the life of most dermal fillers and most liquid face lift procedures. Awi use has dual importance. First, the dermal filler lasts longer. Secondly, it gives the dermal filler more time to stimulate the skin’s own collagen response mechanism for a second layer of enduring results. In some instances, awi use may not be suggested, depending upon the exact nature of the procedure. Ask your Dr Young if supplementing your procedure with awi would be beneficial.
Tip #5 Select Dr Young, he is extremely experienced in the Use of Liquid Face Lift Products
An experienced physician will generally have a better understanding of the advanced injection techniques and product combinations that will extend your results. Extensive experience will also contribute to a physician’s understanding of how unique skin types, physical
conditions, levels of skin damage and other factors play into the mix of optimal treatment recommendations.

Photodynamic Therapy- PDT arrives!
November 24th 2009
What is it? Using a special cream ( ALA) applied to the specific areas of skin that are damaged, then applying a laser, damaged cells are destroyed, and new fresh skin is formed.
How safe is PDT? It is in use for over 10 years, and has a good safety profile.
Who can it help?
- uneven skin tone
- fine lines not helped by awi’s
- sun damaged skin
- acne
- rosacea
- psoriasis
- warts
- large pores
the process
Photodynamic therapy PDT requires the application of a solution. It is applied to the skin for approximately one to three hours prior to the area being exposed to the light source, this sensitizes the damaged skin cells or acne areas. The skin is then covered with a fine film of plastic, which helps the skin absorb the solution. The application process usually causes little if any discomfort. Cool air may also be used to increase comfort throughout the procedure.
recovery process
Immediately after treatment you may feel as if you have sunburn. A cool compress will relieve this sensation. The degree of discomfort and redness can vary greatly between patients. Although no one wants dramatic peeling or redness, a greater reaction to treatment also usually indicates a more dramatic result. Rarely some patients may experience a deeper treatment, which can take four to five weeks for normal skin colour and texture to return. In general, we try to tailor your individual treatment to limit the redness, peeling, and flaking to just a couple days. If necessary, paracetamol may be taken to reduce discomfort, however, if you feel that pain may prevent you sleeping, please contact the clinic.
considerations
Patients must agree to refrain from sun exposure or solariums for two weeks after treatment. Failure to comply with any post-treatment skin care instructions may increase the chance of complications. If scabbing and/or blisters occur after treatment, swimming and contact sports should be avoided.
Winter is a good time for PDT, since you will spend less time in the sun.
risks and complications
Rare side effects may include; blistering of the skin, skin infection, ulceration, scarring, Hypo-pigmentation (lightening of the skin) and Hyper-pigmentation (darkening of the skin). Do NOT rub, scratch or pick at the treated area, as this will cause permanent damage.
faq’s
How does PDT treat acne?
There are three mechanisms of action when using PDT with BLU light is used for the treatment of acne: » Inactivates the bacteria that trigger acne. » Exfoliates the skin to unclog pores. » Shuts down the sebaceous glands in the skin, which are the main cause of the formation of acne.
How will my skin react?
PDT treatment is an invasive procedure, which may cause possible redness, swelling and peeling in the short term, this is normal and should be expected. In most cases, recovery is usually quick with only minimal skin redness or dryness. Makeup can be worn immediately after treatment.
How can I soothe my skin after treatment?
Topical sunburn care products, such as aloe vera, are also helpful. Normal moisturiser can be used to help peeling skin.

Growing older is a once in a lifetime experience. Annette Bezor, artist
November 18th 2009

Tretchikoff at work
Many of you might not know the significance of the painting of the lady with a blue face, that flashes on above.
What is it, who is it, what does it mean?
Yes there is a story, that a young South African beauty, who was walking her dog along Camps Bay beach in the early 50’s, when she was approached, by a young artist. In a few months she would be the model for this such painting, and thus was born- “Lady from Orient”, dated 1955. One of the best selling prints in history.
The artist, Vladimir Tretchikoff, the model, my mother.
Yes, ever since I can remember, I have always had this painting in my family’s lounge room. My mother didn’t really tell us too much about these times, but I think she was very proud of being involved in its creation. Many a time I have looked at it, how do I feel, what is the background, and such.
I have my own interpretations, just as many others do.
Years later, I was to attend a wonderful exhibition by Annette Bezor, an Adelaide based artist, famous for reinvention some of these iconic images, and also for paintings of women for over 30 years.
Serene and beautiful, Annette is just like her work.
It was quite interesting to hear from Annette, that she too has been intrigued by this painting. From the age of 10, Annette tells me she first happened to set eyes on this painting. Its mystery and ethereal beauty staying with her, and years later culminating in various modern versions, and popping into other paintings. Many paintings now have no background, just a large strong face, a strong woman, many are nudes, again they are strong confident women.
Talking about the interpretation of beauty, and the expression of ones inner ideals, I realized, we have much in common, Annette uses her paintbrush, I my various surgical tools.
The title of this blog,” Growing older is a once in a lifetime experience” is of a 1991 painting. It really struck a cord with me, as is the striking painting itself. A lady floating, on water, in space, face unsubmerged, is she leaving something behind, escaping? Entering a new time and place. Simply what is left behind, or what’s ahead doesn’t matter, but rather now is all that matters. Sadly not all of us have the chance to grow older, or atleast very old.
Making the most of our growing experience, is up to us. Each day our cells age, mercifully, it is not overnight.
So how do you want to age?
Come in to see how we can help.
