For those looking to improve their breast shape and/or size, breast augmentation is an option to explore. But through exploration, many women come across the same questions and concerns, leaving them to wonder what they should and shouldn’t believe. That’s why we reached out to find out what the most common myths are regarding breast implants:

1) Saline is safer than silicone.
False. “Saline implants were largely used because silicone implants were thought to cause medical problems. That was never proven to be true,” says Beverly Hills, CA, plastic surgeon John Anastasatos, MD. “In scientific studies and in real life, silicone implants perform equal to or better than saline implants, which are filled with salt water. They produce more of a natural feeling,” adds Dallas plastic surgeon William P. Adams, Jr., MD. However “saline implants require less surveillance and don’t necessitate MRIs,” he continues.

2) Under the muscle is more natural looking than over the muscle.
False. “The practice of placing breast implants under the pectoralis major muscle depends on individual breast anatomy and the type of breast implants selected. Some patients get better, more natural-looking results with the breast implants under the pectoralis major muscle, while others over the muscle,” says Dr. Anastasatos. It really depends on your unique anatomy.

3) You cannot breast feed after you have had a breast augmentation.
False. When a breast augmentation is done via an incision through the inframammary fold, armpit or belly button, there is not usually a problem with breast-feeding.

4) Natural breast augmentation with fat is better than breast implants.
False. Taking a person’s own fat with liposuction and adding it to the breasts may create future problems because some of the fat transferred will perish within a year, says Dr. Anastasatos. “It’s a new technology, and there is no regulatory approval in the U.S., so the technique is not yet standardized,” says Nashville, TN, plastic surgeon Pat Maxwell, MD. So at this point, “the procedure is very controversial, and there is concern about the long-term safety and efficacy,” says La Jolla, CA, plastic surgeon Robert Singer, MD.

5) You need breast implants for a breast lift.
False. Breast implants are not a treatment for breast sagginess. Only a breast lift (mastopexy) corrects sagginess.

Having a breast augmentation, usually requires a few operations in a lifetime. With the Brazilian furry PU coated silicone implants, the capsular contraction rate is far less.

Macrolane, an injectable filler used for “lunchtime boob jobs”, is to be withdrawn for such purposes this week. A survey by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) found that 25% of its members noticed patient complications from the filler. Experts warn it could affect breast cancer screenings but manufacturer Q-Med said there was a lack of consensus. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said Macrolane could effect mammogram readings and make diagnosis more difficult.

We have over a 30% male patient clientele..who receive all kinds of plastic surical treatments, eg eyelid surgery, liposculpture, to antiwrinkle injections.

in the SMH, march 20th 2012….

They call it “Brotox” – slang for Botox treatments for guys.

Evan Lo Balbo had never heard of the word until his girlfriend suggested they do something to fight the mean signs of ageing on their faces.

But there he was, a manly man, sitting in a reclining chair, Dr Richard Castellano pushing needles into his forehead.

“I’ve popped zits that hurt more than that,” he said afterward. “It wasn’t bad at all.”

Lo Balbo is among a growing number of guys getting Botox injections and facial fillers to improve their looks.

The term “Brotox” isn’t new, but got a boost in January when Good Morning America did a profile on women who think their men need Botox and give it to them as gifts. For those versed in mash-up lingo, “Brotox” went mainstream, joining “bromance” and other “brocabulary” spoken from one “bro” to another.

Men get Botox to look younger and gain confidence. They might be competing for a new job or trying to score a date. Too often, perhaps, people have told them that they look tired.

“Today’s man is evolving,” Dr Castellano said. “Guys are feelling more comfortable with improving their appearance. They aren’t as scared.”

Guys prefer Botox over face-lifts and other more extreme, expensive procedures because it’s quick without many side effects, he said.

“They can come in for a few shots, then go back to work. And if they don’t like the results, they aren’t permanent,” the doctor said.

Last year, more than 300,000 men in the US got Botox, according to figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons – a 10 per cent increase from the previous year – and numbers are also on the rise in Australia.

Castellano’s office in Florida, has seen even more. The 39-year-old facial plastic surgeon estimates Botox use among his male clients has doubled. He uses it himself.

Like their female counterparts, more men are starting treatments at a younger age. They prefer not to wait for visible signs of ageing in their 50s and 60s. They want to prevent them.

Lo Balbo said he didn’t like what he saw in the mirror: new lines on his forehead and around his eyes. A graphic designer, he wants to look presentable for clients. Squinting at a computer all day only worsens the situation.

But when his girlfriend, Heather Knox, recommended they both try some cosmetic pick-me-ups, he refused. What would his friends think? What would he tell people? A little more prodding and Lo Balbo changed his mind. He wanted to support his 31-year-old girlfriend and figured he might like the results.

Getting the news past his roommate, an electrician, was the toughest part. “He was like, ‘Really’”

About two weeks after the Botox and facial fillers, Lo Balbo had no regrets. His girlfriend praised his smoother forehead. No one noticed a big change.

A year after starting Botox, Scott Gass, 38, said the differences are subtle but noticeable enough to come back for more every six months.

“I’m getting up there in age a little bit,” he said. “Unfortunately, lines come. I just want to look my best,” Gass said.

Gass considers himself a masculine guy with metrosexual tendencies. He’s single, eats healthy and works out daily. He takes care of himself.

Not many of his friends know he gets Botox, but he doesn’t avoid the subject. He likes calling it Brotox. It sounds macho, even hip. He wouldn’t frown upon recommending it to his bros.

We keep our men looking like men, just more defined, and fresh.

For women who want to reverse the signs of aging, we suggest three easy treatments- IPL, fillers, and Radiesse, or the new Ellanse.

Plastic Surgery isn’t always required, but if there is too much skin, or sagging, then definitely it may be warranted- eg Eyelids, and tummy tucks for sleek and slender looks.

Dermal fillers are effective for static lines, those that are visible on the face at rest. eg Nasolabial folds, of course Dr Young specializes in cheek and temple rejuvenation.

The hands are one of the most reliable indicators of age. During the aging process, the skin thins, and thus veins, and bones show. With any of our dermal filler we add volume, and fill in these hollows.

Looking great can be at any age. Dr Young will develop a strategy whereby you can easily maintain youthful, supple, and glowing skin.

Plastic surgery procedures such as facelifts, or eyelid surgery may be needed, but we can all start with good skin care, come in to one our clinics, to see how we can make you look fabulous.

For the second year in a row, the number of cosmetic procedures performed in America increased, illustrating that an uncertain economy isn’t deterring patients. A total of 13.8 million cosmetic procedures, both invasive and minimally invasive, were performed in 2011, a 5 percent increase over 2010. Reconstructive surgeries were also up 5 percent to 5.5 million procedures, according to reports released this week from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Somewhat surprisingly, facelifts saw a 5 percent increase (119,000 procedures) for the first time since 2004, yet eyelid surgery saw a 6 percent decrease. The top five surgeries included facelifts, as well as breast augmentation (307,000 procedures), nose reshaping (244,000), liposuction (205,000) and eyelid surgery (196,000).

Among minimally invasive treatments, Botox injections lead with 5.7 million procedures, followed by fillers (1.9 million), chemical peels (1.1 million), laser hair removal (1.1 million) and microdermabrasion (900,000). Laser hair removal saw the biggest jump, up 15 percent, since 2010.

“While the rate of economic recovery in the U.S. is still uncertain, 2011 proved to be a good year for plastic surgery,” said ASPS President Malcolm Z. Roth, MD. “Consumer confidence was up, auto sales rose 10 percent, so it is not surprising that we would also see increased demand for plastic surgery procedures.”

Were you one of those patients who helped increase the 2011 numbers, or will 2012 be the year you opt for a cosmetic procedure? Let us know!

At Freshface, we always strive to keep our patients looking as great as possible, from minimally invasive to surgical procedures.

Although helped along by cosmetics, hair dyes, and the like, it is the superficial and deep anatomy that determines the appearance of external form. While far from uniform across a large population, certain major features determined by genetics occur much more commonly and thus can be considered characteristic of a regional group.

Below we’ve collected, grouped, compared, and demonstrated important attributes (for instance, shape, height, fullness, and so on) for each of the major facial features found in people of East Asia or Europe and presented them side-by-side.

Since the fundamental steps of many popular facial plastic surgery operations were first developed decades ago on patients of European ancestry, the differences noted below must be considered by both patients when selecting a cosmetic procedure and plastic surgeons when performing it. What looks natural and attractive in one group does not always appear the same in the other.

You likely know why your tummy is in its current, less-than-svelte shape: maybe you’ve had a few kids, you’ve yo-yo dieted or your stress levels are out of control. And despite your attempts to combat it through diet and exercise, you still have a stubborn pouch of fat or unsightly sagging skin. That’s why it may be time to consider another approach to flattening your tummy once and for all: a tummy tuck.

Keep in mind, there are many types of tummy tucks, from a mini-tummy tuck that just focuses on the lower tummy with a small incision, to a traditional tummy tuck that requires a larger scar across the front of the body (but below the bikini line). Some tummy tuck procedures can also address love handles or excess skin and fat on the upper abdomen.

Also note if you had surgery before and now have a little bulge in the area- it may be a hernia, so that needs to be addressed.

In addition muscle tightening or adjusting the belly button can be addressed.

Dr Young uses his skill and experience in General and Plastic Surgery to address both these issues.
